Frequently Asked Questions
What is speech therapy?
A speech-language pathologist (SLP) helps treat individuals with communication challenges related to how well one uses words (expressive language), understands words (receptive language) and uses language in social situations (pragmatics). A SLP also treats swallowing, fluency and voice disorders. Schedule a consultation today to get more information about how we can help.
Does my child need speech therapy?
This depends on what concerns you are noticing at home. It is important to remember that every child learns at their own rate. However, to help determine if your child is on the right track, the information below briefly outlines general guidelines. We encourage families to consult with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to discuss your concerns further. A SLP will help to determine if proceeding with speech therapy services will be beneficial for you and your child.
Consult a speech therapist if your child is exhibiting the following (but not limited to):
12-15 months: Only making few sounds; Has not expressed first words
21-24 months: Grunts and points rather than uses words to communicate something that they want; Not using two-word combinations frequently
36 months:
Not using three-word combinations frequently
48 months:
Difficulty understanding what your child is saying (mostly unintelligible speech)
Do you take insurance?
At this time Milestone Speech Therapy is a cash pay provider and does not take insurance. However, a superbill is available upon request and may help you seek reimbursement from your insurance provider for out-of-network services (depending on your plan). We ask that our families contact their insurance offices for out-of-network coverage.
What are the benefits of In-Home Therapy?
Working in a natural environment has proven to be effective as it creates the opportunity to embed therapy into your families’ daily routines, activities and play. Our team will work with clients and families to enhance utilization of meaningful language strategies in your home environment. We realize that many clients and families are busier than ever. Therefore, in-home therapy can reduce potential stresses related to being in a foreign environment (as some clients work better in the comfort of their home), travel time, transportation costs and physical activity in which energy can be saved for efficacious therapy sessions.
